Mr Dettman – 11En3 – Macbeth Act 1 Scene 2 – The Battle!

Due: Thursday, 29th January

Read part of the Captain’s report to (his King) Duncan, on how the battle against the traitor, Macdonald, went:

For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—
Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel,
Which smoked with bloody execution,
Like valor’s minion carved out his passage
Till he faced the slave;
Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him,
Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops,
And fixed his head upon our battlements.

E/D Grade: What do we learn of Macbeth’s courage and skill in Act 1, Scene 2 of Macbeth?  Describe what he did during the battle.  What does this suggest about his character?

C/B Grade: Given that the witches have decided to ‘meet Macbeth […] upon the heath’, speculate (suggest) what you feel they will do to him.  Do you think they wish him harm?  How will such a brave and noble leader respond?
