PLE – 11xEN1 – Home learning due Friday 16 May

After looking through the past six past papers (I emailed them to you), list the themes that are in the play but which haven’t featured in the last six exams. THEN, choose one to sketch a brief plan for using CRISP to structure what your response would include.

The themes what are shown follow as:

    January 2012: Justice
    January 2013: Hatred
    June 2011: Conflict between characters
    June 2012: Importance of money
    November 2012: The law
    November 2013: Friendship

The themes which don’t show up in the exams are:

    -Love
    -Mercy
    -The pound of flesh

The one theme I would do a sketch map about is: Love

C(haracter): Antonio and Bassanio. Both have different kinds of love. Is Portia jealous of Antonio’s closeness with Bassanio? Does Bassanio really love Portia?

R(elationships): Brotherly love. Portia and Bassanio, (Casket scene.) Both have different kinds of love. Nerissa and Gratiano.

I(deas): What is Shakespeare saying about love? Hoe does the idea of love fit into the play? What was considered love in Shakespearean England? Is there a single way of love being portrayed?

S(ignificance): How important is love in the court scene? How does it affect the play? Is it just shown in this scene, or were the events foreshadowed? Does it affect the majority of events that take place?

P(lot): What happens next following on from the scene in relation to the theme.
