Continuing from the lesson today, look at question ‘B’from the sheet I gave you and write one more point about how those lines should be performed.

When Portia delivers the line ‘Yes, yes, it was Bassanio; as I think, he was so called.’ she should have a look of discern on her face, to show that she recognizes exactly who Nerissa is talking about. Also, the actress that portrays her should then be stood at the front of the stage to show the presence that she has, powerfully engaging the audience when she turns to her left to face Nerissa, hands outstretched as if the answer had just occurred for the question ‘Do you not remember, lady, in your father’s time,a Venetian, a scholar and A soldier, that came hither in company of the Marquis of Montferrat?

When the line “I remember him well, and I remember him worthy of thy praise” is spoken by Portia, she should step forwards, towards the audience and look slightly up towards the ceiling; this therefore will portray to the audience that Portia’s attitude has changed; that Portia has an attraction for Bassanio. This should be done when the says “I remember him well” so it comes across, when she looks up at the ceiling that she is in a daydream or de ja vu, where she is imaging back to the first she met him.

When Portia delivers the lines: ‘yes, yes, it was Bassanio; as I think, he was so called.’ She should be stood nearer the front of the stage to show the authority she holds over Nerissa but with a relaxed posture to show their friendship through them being comfortable with each other. Her expression should show her deep in thought, as she concentrates on remembering her meeting with Bassanio; perhaps looking off into the distance to effectively suggest how lost in hwe tthoughts of him Portia is.

When the line: ‘yes, yes it was Bassanio; as i think, he was so called’ is said by Portia, she should step foreward towards the audience and look up and out when she says Bassanio’s name. By Portia looking up when the name ‘ Bassanio’ is said, it helps to portray that she is remembering what he was like and re-capping his image in her head. In addition, she should then make eye contact back towards Nerissa with her eyes widened showing enthusiasm. Moreover, Portia’s posture should be upright, as it helps to show authority and her class in comparison to Nerissa.

When the line: ‘I remember him well, and I remember him worthy of thy praise’ spoken by Portia, She should start to wonder around the room as though daydreaming about Bassanio with a smile on her face; this will show the audience that she is in deep thought and happiness about this man she has met before because, her behaviour has changed in an instant from annoyed and in disgust from hearing about the other men. ‘and I remember him worthy of thy praise’ her eyes should widely open and her hands reaching for each other to slowly raise to her face: to show love through the classic gestures which give it away, this will give the audience a immediate impression of what she thinks of Bassanio.
