To prepare I am going to try and memorize even more and then when I have done this, I will try to alter my tone and expression of my voice, so that I can add more emotion and emphasis to the poem.

My preperation method involves reading the poem several times over, in my head and out loud, in order to get ahold of the poem’s content. I then spend time looking at the poem and interpreting it in my own way to try and grasp its meaning. I write it out, focusing on the words of the poem and what it’s saying. I’ll then read it aloud as many times as I can from the page, before realising that I no longer need a prompt and am then able to read it without looking at it. I’ll get my family to test me by giving them the poem and performing it to them. I have used this method for my preperation for my post-1914 poem, as I did for my pre-1914 poem.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I like Sophie’s intention to use appropriate intonation and Rosie’s thorough approach should be adopted by everyone. Have a look at the link I’ve provided to see how last year’s competitors in the national competition did it.

In preperation for tomorrows recital of the post war poem i will re-read the poem as many times as i can and perform it to whoever is around, getting them to tell me which areas i need to practice further.

To prepare for the next lesson I will memorise my poem further especially the pre 1914 poems. I will do this by reading over it and remembering the poem more so I can be more confident when I have to read the poem.
